(Above) The Western Mining and Railroad Museum outdoor exhibit has a
large collection of mining equipment. The old wooden mine car is a reminder of the early days of Utah
coal mining.

founded in 1915.
(Above) This track mounted face drill can also be used to install roof
bolts for ground support.
(Right) This
continuous mining machine cuts coal from the face in a room and pillar
mining system.The broken coal is
conveyed to a shuttle car behind it.
Johnny is standing next to a SULLIVAN rocker shovel loading machine.
An EIMCO rocker shovel, common in metal mines, is less frequently
associated with coal mining.
A JOY gathering arm loader replaced the laborious process of hand
loading coal into cars.
On this JOY loader, gathering arms move the broken coal to the central
chain conveyor.The conveyor
deposits the coal into a waiting shuttle car.
This JOY shuttle car transported the coal from the mining face to either
rail-mounted coal cars or to a rubber conveyor belt.
Another view of the shuttle car.
The chain conveyor in its base is used for moving the coal during
loading and dumping.
This
continuous mining machine used a rotating cutting head to rip coal from
the face.Gathering arms
moved the broken coal to a chain conveyor which moved the coal to a
shuttle car.
In longwall coal mining the double drum shearers cut the coal as the
machine moves back and forth across the face. The machine operator is behind the machine and under a full line
of hydraulic shields (three shields are shown). Behind the shields, the
roof collapses safely reducing stress over the operator.
(Above) Another type of double drum longwall coal shearing machine. The coal cut by the shearer falls onto a chain conveyor which
carries it to the end of the longwall panel (at the left). At that
point, the coal where it transfers to a conveyor belt for transport out
of the mine.

continuing to the mining area at Hiawatha, Utah.
