Cleveland-Cliffs Tilden Mine complex located south of Ishpeming, MI.  Since 1974, it has produced low-grade (taconite-type) iron ore.  The concentrator uses crushing, autogenous grinding, and both magnetic separation and flotation to produce magnetite and hematite concentrates which are pelletized in the adjacent plant.  The nearby Empire Mine operated from 1963-2018.  CLICK HERE for Cleveland-Cliffs Tilden Mine  Facts Sheet.

The MHA morning tour group, shown above, viewed the Tilden Mine operations from an observation point high above the open pit.  On the bus route to the mine they got a view of the Tilden Concentrator and Pellet Plant.  Iron pellets from the mine are transported to the ore dock by rail for loading into ore boats bound for the lower Great Lakes.

The afternoon tour group followed the same tour route.
